It’s Okay to Cry
People react to better hearing in a wide variety of ways. Recently one of our patients came in for maintenance on a hearing aid. She brought a thank you card which expressed her appreciation and she cried as she described how precious better hearing is to her.
We don’t see that level of emotion every day, but we certainly appreciate all the cards we get. What is more common is the gentleman who has an obvious hearing loss, but who is in denial of the problem. Other people mumble. His wife turns away as she’s speaking and he doesn’t understand. “I never realized how much I was missing!”
I heard it again last week when a patient came in for some minor hearing aid maintenance. “I never realized how much I was missing!” She said this when we had her hearing aids back up to speed and she was ready to leave the office. The remark was in reference to how she was hearing a couple of years ago, before she was properly fitted with a pair of hearing aids. Hearing aid advertisements can be deceptive things. I’d like to offer a short primer to guide you through them and I’d like to start with just one word. Free.
Free hearing test. Free ear inspection. Free package of hearing aid batteries. Free is an attractive word. You’ve been wondering about your hearing lately, so why not? What do you have to lose?
