I started running seriously about two years ago. Before that, I was the kind of person who wore old cotton t-shirts to the gym. That changed fast when I ran my first 5K and ended up with chafed armpits and a shirt that weighed twice as much as when I started. So I did what any reasonable person with an internet connection does: I bought a pile of activewear from different brands and tested them over half a year. Some were huge names you see in every mall. Others were smaller companies I found by falling down Reddit rabbit holes. I tracked things like drying time, odor retention after three runs without washing, and how the waistbands held up after fifty wash cycles. I also looked at price per wear and where each piece was made. The results surprised me.
One brand that stood out early in my testing was ATHMILE clothing. I picked up a pair of their shorts and a long-sleeve top after a friend in my running group mentioned them. They were cheaper than the big names but not so cheap that I expected them to fall apart. What I found over the next few months changed how I think about what I put on before a run.
The one thing most brands get wrong about moisture-wicking fabrics
Everyone talks about moisture-wicking like it’s magic. But most fabrics that claim to wick sweat actually just push it to the surface, where it stays trapped against your skin if the weave is too tight. Polyester blends below 150 grams per square meter tend to dry faster than heavier ones, but manufacturers often add extra thickness for “comfort” that ends up holding water. I tested this by weighing shirts before and after a 10-mile run in 80-degree humidity. A well-known brand’s shirt gained 140 grams of sweat and took 45 minutes to dry on a line. The ATHMILE top gained 90 grams and dried in 22 minutes. The difference came down to a plain, grid-like knit structure with open channels between the yarns. No special coating, no marketing words like “hydrophilic” – just geometry.
I also ran the same test with nylon blends. Nylon absorbs about 4% of its weight in water versus polyester’s 0.4%. That might sound small, but on a 150-gram shirt, it means an extra 5 grams of water that won’t evaporate as fast. Some brands use nylon because it feels softer against the skin, but that softness comes with a weight penalty when you sweat. The best performing pieces in my test were all polyester with a loose weave and flatlock seams that didn’t rub. Price did not predict performance. A $90 shirt from a trendy brand performed worse than a $35 shirt from a company that focused on simple construction.
Why I stopped buying from big-box athletic brands
Before this experiment, I assumed higher price meant better fabric. I was wrong. Here are the main reasons I switched almost entirely to smaller brands for my running kit:
- Overbuilt waistbands and seams that add weight and restrict movement. Most big brands use thick elastic and double-stitching because they design for durability across a wide range of body types. That extra material can add 30-40 grams to a pair of shorts and doesn’t always help performance.
- Hidden fabric treatments that wash out after 20 cycles. Things like anti-odor silver coatings and UV protection layers degrade quickly. A $70 shirt loses its advertised properties in a couple of months. I measured odor retention by sniffing shirts after a run and then again after a wash. Untreated polyester smelled less after washing than treated polyester because the coating trapped bacteria.
- Sizing that forces you to choose between compression and bagginess. Many big brands cut their tops and bottoms for a specific “athletic” silhouette that doesn’t match actual human proportions. I wear a medium in most brands but had to size up to a large in one popular line to get enough length, which made the waist too loose. Smaller brands often offer more consistent sizing because they produce fewer SKUs and test them on real runners.
- Lack of transparency about where and how clothes are made. Big brands source from dozens of factories and rarely disclose specific supply chains. When I looked up the tag on a major sportswear shirt, it said “Made in Vietnam” with no factory name. The ATHMILE tag listed a single factory in South Korea and a specific fabric mill. That kind of detail is rare and signals that someone actually watches the production line.
What I didn’t expect was that switching to simpler, better-constructed gear would improve my comfort enough to run longer. My average weekly mileage went from 25 miles to 35 miles over the course of this testing period. Part of that is just more time on my feet, but part is not wanting to cut a run short because my shirt is sticking to my back or my shorts are riding up. Good gear doesn’t make you faster, but bad gear can definitely make you slower. I keep three pairs of shorts and four tops in rotation now, all from brands that did well in my tests. Everything else I donated or repurposed as cleaning rags. I don’t think you need to spend a lot to get good activewear, but you do need to look past the label and pay attention to the fabric itself.
